Leading Database Expert, Systems Designer Steve Jones, Joins PointBase As Engineering VP

Steve Jones brings two-plus decades of database experience to leadership role for PointBase platform independent data management and synchronization products

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA., Oct. 2, 2000 — PointBase, the leader in platform independent technology for data management and synchronization, announced today that database and systems design expert Stephen E. Jones has joined the company as vice president of engineering. Jones, a 26-year veteran of the data management and systems software industry, is responsible for leading the technical development of industry-leading PointBase 100% Pure Java databases and data management and synchronization products. He reports to Bruce Scott, PointBase founder and CEO.

"Steve Jones is a seasoned development manager with extensive experience in the development and design of database technology. Steve has worked on many of the same development issues that PointBase is addressing today with platform independent data management for dispersed and heterogeneous corporate data applications," Scott said. "His background, experience and leadership will help PointBase capture the huge opportunities for serving this market. We are pleased to welcome him to our team."

Career-long specialist in database technologies, Steve Jones comes to PointBase from Hyperion Solutions, where he was senior principal architect on Hyperion Planning, an enterprise-scale budgeting and planning product. He joined Hyperion after running his own consulting firm, Stephen Jones Consulting, for eight years, working with dozens of major clients on data management, software and system architecture issues. Clients included Amdahl Corporation, Bank of Boston, Cisco Systems, Eastman Kodak, Recognition International, Tandem Computers and TRW Financial Systems.

Before that he was director of DataServer Software at Plexus Computers, Inc., where he hired and managed the team that developed the company's Unix- and SQL-based data management software for imaging. He also managed the firm's Database, Operating Systems, Communications and QA groups. While at Plexus, Steve also served on the ANSI SQL committee.

Prior to that, Jones was the manager of Database Software at Synapse Computer Corporation. There, he formed and led the team that developed the Synapse database product, a relational database management system (DBMS) for Online Transaction Processing. The system was the first commercial implementation of a symmetric multi-processor, and it included the DBMS within the operating system.

He began his career at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he did development and research into database management systems and led the development of one of the first complete relational DBMSs, for the scientific timesharing community.

Jones has a B.S. and an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Nebraska.
