SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 27, 2000 — PointBase, the leader in platform independent technology for data management and synchronization, announced today at the Embedded Systems Conference that NewMonics, a leading supplier of advanced development solutions for next-generation embedded systems, has joined its QuickPoint partners program for independent software vendors (ISVs). The relationship brings together two platforms — PointBase Java databases and the NewMonics PERC® Java-compliant virtual machine — that both offer small footprints and highly efficient architectures for developing embedded Java device applications.

"This is an excellent relationship because our PERC Virtual Machine has precisely the same characteristics as PointBase — small, fast, and designed specifically for embedded platforms," said Tim Tumilty, vice president of sales and business development. "We see PERC and PointBase emerging as the embedded Java device platform of choice, providing developers with a fast and cost-effective environment for creating sophisticated next-generation embedded systems."

"With its innovative memory management technology, NewMonics does for the Java run-time environment what PointBase does for Java databases, so pairing the two for embedded applications is a natural," said Bruce Scott, president and CEO of PointBase "We believe that this relationship will help us to jointly lead the market for embedded Java applications, which presents tremendous growth opportunities in the next few years."

An integration of PointBase databases with the NewMonics PERC virtual machine is available immediately from NewMonics, and PointBase database products will be available on PERC evaluation kits in the fourth quarter 2000. The two company's products have widespread applications — initial targets include developers for the telecommunications, data communications, industrial automation and transportation industries.

About the PointBase QuickPoint Program
PointBase's QuickPoint program offers profitable opportunities for ISVs to develop, market and support database-driven Java solutions for e-commerce, mobile and Internet-enabled applications. The program enables ISVs to produce a portable, pure Java, easy-to-download demo or evaluation software that includes a database and requires no database configuration, and provides marketing support opportunities and other benefits.
