PointBase Announces Winner of $25,000 "Code for the Road" Application Contest at JavaCon 2000
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA., Sept. 25, 2000 PointBase announced today the winners for its "Code for the Road" application contest. The application contest was announced at JavaOne in June 2000. Application developers were given 3 months to submit their entries demonstrating use of PointBase products in a mobile application. Application developers could submit either existing solutions or write a new solution.
"This contest was a great success," said Bruce Scott, PointBase Founder and CEO. "Our key goal for this contest was to increase the awareness for PointBase and to help nurture new ideas for mobile applications, and I believe we have done that."
The judging panel consisted of Chuck Boesenberg (President, Post PC Ventures, PointBase Board member), Richard Finkelstein (CTO, JK&B Capital, PointBase Board member), and Bruce Scott (President and CEO, PointBase).
The key criteria for selection were adherence to SQL and JDBC standards, effective use of PointBase products and features, enabled for "on the road", creativity, elegance of the solution, performance, usability, quality, ease of install/uninstall (integrated database), clarity of code (for open source solutions), completeness and clarity of documentation, and demonstrated market need for the solution.
Over 80 entries were received from all over the world.
The $25,000 Grand Prize winner was Henry Tu, Redwood City, California. He submitted his "ServletAgent" product, a complete web application development tool and server for developing and delivering scalable Web-based applications. "I am really excited," said Henry. I have been thinking about launching my company and winning this prize will definitely help me." On being asked about his experience with PointBase, he said "PointBase is a great product, easy to learn, install and administer. Its small footprint, platform independence and stability allow one to use it on most Internet devices."
The runner up for the Commercial category was Ty Hayden, Fairborn, Ohio. He submitted "Knowledge Konnect" a product from his company Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corp. (BATC). KnowledgeKonnect is a server-based suite of enterprise applications that aid in the collaboration of workflow for team members that are geographically separated. Ty said "Folks at BATC are ecstatic at winning the prize and even more so at the opportunity to meet with a venture capitalist. You see, BATC has been contemplating commercializing the Knowledge Konnect product and this could very well be the instigator." On his experience with PointBase he said, "PointBase provides KnowledgeKonnect with an integrated, scalable, 100% pure Java, high performance, and competitively priced database solution. All these features are key requirements of the KnowledgeKonnect suite of products."
