Widely Recognized Database Expert, Rick Cattell, Joins PointBase Board

Key developer of Sun Microsystems' Java platform strategy joins the board of directors for leader in platform independent data management and synchronization products

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA., August 29, 2000 — PointBase, a leader in Java technology-based data management and synchronization products for servers, desktops, laptops, and mobile/wireless devices, announced today that a widely recognized database expert R.G. G. "Rick" Cattell has joined the company's board of directors. Cattell, a 26-year veteran of the software industry, is a distinguished engineer in the Software Systems Group of Sun Microsystems. He also is a key contributor to Sun's strategy on the Java 2 platform and server technologies, a co-creator of Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) API, and a founder and chair of the Object Database Management Group (ODMG) for developing object database standards.

"PointBase has tremendous potential for delivering on the promise of corporate-wide, platform independent data management for dispersed heterogeneous data applications," Cattell said. "I am honored to become a member of the board, and I find it very gratifying on both a personal and professional level to have an opportunity to help PointBase chart its path toward developing and serving that market."

"Rick Cattell had a hand in developing many of the Java technologies that enable PointBase databases, and our company owes a great debt to him," said Bruce Scott, PointBase founder and CEO. "We welcome him to our board and look forward to his contributions toward our future growth."

About Rick Cattell
Rick Cattell has served in senior technical and management roles at Sun for the last 16 years, and prior to that, he spent 10 years in research at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) and Carnegie-Mellon University.

He is the author of five books — including the first ever on object-oriented and object-relational database management systems — and more than 50 technical papers. With Sun, he established the company's Database Engineering Group (1987) and its highly successful relational database strategy that led to a database server business that now runs at more than $1 billion annually. He also instigated Sun's enterprise Java technology effort that culminated in Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (1997), and led development of Sun's Simplify database GUI (1984 to 1986).

Cattell is a co-founder of the SQL/Access Group, which set standards for SQL on networks and the application programming interfaces of advanced graphical database interfaces.
