Database Requirements For e-Business Computing Outlined In New White Paper From PointBase
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- (INTERNET WIRE) -- 07/27/2000 -- As e-business systems access requirements grow dramatically in the coming years, corporate networks need to transform into large distributed e-business configurations that accommodate a wide range of client devices - from permanently connected desktop systems to occasionally connected wireless phones, and mobile handheld computers. The key to success in this environment: having database products that store and manage information anywhere in the e-business system, thereby enabling easy access to - and exchange of - information.
This is the premise of a new white paper, "Emerging Database Technologies for E-Business," prepared by Colin J. White of DataBase Associates, Ashland, Ore., for PointBase, the leader in mobile wireless data management and synchronization products. The paper describes the role of - and the requirements for - databases in e-business, contrasting today's e-business computing with the two previous generations of mainframe and client/server computing. The paper goes on to compare the relative strengths and weaknesses of today's database technologies - object, relational and Java relational - for e-business deployment.
Java relational databases - like those offered by PointBase - have many clear advantages for e- business applications, and that is one reason they are beginning to gain broad acceptance in corporate information technology departments, the paper reports. "The PointBase database system has been designed with these (new e-business) requirements in mind, and for organizations that are committed to the Java application promise of write once run anywhere, the PointBase system is a new breed of database product designed to satisfy their e-business needs," White wrote.
