PointBase Announces Support For SyncML, First Universal Data Synchronization Standard

More than four dozen I.T. and communications industry leaders now are aligned to develop and support anytime, anywhere data access and use

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, May 16, 2000 PointBase, the leader in mobile wireless 100% Pure Java data management products, today announced its support for the SyncML initiative, which is developing a universal standard for data synchronization. The initiative, founded by Ericsson, IBM, Lotus, Motorola, Nokia, Palm, Inc., Psion and Starfish Software and supported by more than 40 other telecommunications and information technology companies, seeks to release an open data synchronization protocol later this year to ease data exchange across networks, platforms and device types. As the provider of technology for extending and synchronizing enterprise data among wireless devices, Internet appliances, mobile applications, and networked servers, PointBase brings expertise for developing the standard as well as a leading product line to support it.

"The entire line of PointBase data management products is developed with 100% Pure Java to complement precisely what the SyncML initiative is after," said Bruce Scott, president and CEO of PointBase "Our mutual goal is to permit users of almost any device to easily access and work with data from any system, anytime and anywhere."

Most current data synchronization is based on multiple sets of different protocols, each one functioning with a limited number of data types, devices or systems. The SyncML Initiative will leverage industry standards such as Extensible Markup Language (XML), MIME, the vCard and the iCalendar to deliver an open industry specification, enabling a new generation of universal interoperability among systems and devices.

Developers will be able to create interoperable wireless and wired data synchronization products across corporate servers, Web servers, computers, laptops, personal digital assistants (PDAs), handheld computers, mobile phones and other mobile devices, regardless of platform or manufacturer. Personal and enterprise information, including e-mail, calendars, to-do lists, contact information and other critical data, will be accessible and up to date regardless of where the information is stored, giving users unmatched flexibility in the device they select to use while on the move.

The specification will be provided to developers as an easily accessible code for enabling SyncML support.

About PointBase Products
The PointBase line of data management products covers the full range of mobile and network data applications with the industry's leading line of 100% pure Java databases, to support workers in the field as well as multi-user applications in e-commerce and multi-platform server environments. PointBase databases are Internet ready for deployment on nearly any platform. The company's product line includes:

  • PointBase Mobile Edition — A database offering broad database functionality for higher end PDAs that are less memory constrained and for desktop or laptop systems. The database is optimized for a small footprint — as compact as an industry-leading 150 kilobytes — for pre-configured applications running on mobile devices.
  • PointBase Embedded Server Edition — A database designed for embedding in applications requiring unattended operation with data from multi-user, multiple connection, full-featured databases.
  • UniSync — A data synchronization solution for sharing data between PointBase and other systems including Oracle, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase and Informix. It supports occasionally connected users running PointBase across hundreds of systems.

About SyncML
Founded by Ericsson, IBM, Lotus, Motorola, Nokia, Palm, Inc., Psion and Starfish Software, the SyncML Initiative develops and promotes an open industry specification for universal data synchronization of remote data and personal information across multiple networks, platforms and devices. The SyncML Initiative is open for participation to a wide range of industries including device manufacturers, synchronization vendors, service providers and application developers. Companies interested in joining are encouraged to contact the SyncML Initiative today to become part of the team and deliver the SyncML specification available later this year.
