PointBase Launches Version 3 Of Its Java Database Targeting Advanced Data Management For Wireless & Mobile Devices
New PointBase release offers database triggers, enhanced developer tools, performance boosts and Unicode compliance
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 7, 2000 data management products for mobile and wireless applications led by Oracle Corporation co-founder Bruce Scott, today announced the availability of Version 3, bringing improved functionality and performance to the company's object-relational Java database for networked and mobile applications. The new release offers SQL-standard database triggers, enhanced developer tools, improved performance, and multi-byte character support for international languages, through compliance with the Unicode standard.
"Version 3 marks another milestone in the evolution of PointBase, which has become the Java community's leading solution for the global deployment and management of data over the Net," said Bruce Scott, president and CEO of PointBase "The new features and capabilities in this release respond directly to customer feedback and make our system attractive to new categories of users, such as those requiring the double-byte language support provided through Unicode."
Version 3 of the PointBase family of 100% pure Java database management products supports the development of applications for mass deployment across the Internet, mobile applications for global enterprises, and embedded applications for Internet appliances and devices.
The new version has been in use on a test basis at many customer sites since December; the first widely available release is 3.1, which is being announced today and is available immediately. For a free evaluation copy go to: http://www.pointbase.com/products/downloads/.
About the New Release
Version 3 offers new capabilities that improve management and integration of data across the Internet, while extending enterprise data to mobile computers, network infrastructure equipment, and remote and local servers.
The newly implemented database triggers can greatly improve efficiency and performance by implementing application logic directly in the database. For instance, the database can be programmed to automatically update inventory lists when customer orders are placed, and to trigger reorders if inventory goes below a certain level.
Performance has improved in many functions, including I/O processing, database cache operations, and storage and retrieval of large objects (such as images, voice files, or Java classes).
The PointBase GUI console incorporates a number of new features that improve efficiency for developers including SQL Routine wizards, new catalog entries for SQL routines (procedures and functions), pop-up tool tips and context-sensitive pop-up menus.
The new release also offers full support of the Unicode standard for the world's principal international languages, including those in European, Middle East, and Pacific Rim countries. PointBase's comprehensive implementation of Unicode allows developers to select language support for individual database columns, tables, database schemas, or entire databases depending upon application requirements.
