PointBase Announces Support for Linux-based Operating Systems

100% Pure Java Technology Embedded Database Products Now Available for Millions of Red Hat Linux Users

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, June 16, 1999 PointBase, the company lead by Oracle Corporation co-founder Bruce Scott, today announced that two new 100% Pure Java database products, PointBase Mobile Edition and PointBase Network Server are compatible with Java on Red Hat Linux. Developers using the Red Hat Linux operating system can now create and deploy applications that require full object-relational database support for Web appliances, mobile systems, and e-commerce over the Internet.

Bruce Scott, CEO of PointBase, said, "We are very pleased to provide developers with a complete, persistent storage solution that neatly complements the strengths of Linux: low-cost of ownership, functionality and adherence to open standards. PointBase's embedded database delivers the comprehensive capabilities needed to enable transparent integration with enterprise databases."

"Java is fast becoming one of the most popular application and development standards in the world," said Fran Phillips, Business Development Manager for Red Hat, Inc. "PointBase is a member of our Professional Developer Program and their support of Linux lets users leverage Java technology-based databases for even greater flexibility in enterprise, mobile and Web-enabled applications."

Industry Momentum
All three of PointBase's target markets e-commerce; mobile workers; and Web-based appliances, devices and set-top boxes are on the high-growth path. These robust markets are driving the increasing need for embedded databases to support the applications that enable e-commerce, workforce mobility, and Internet appliance computing. Dataquest has noted that the overall market for embedded databases is expected to grow at a 40 percent clip through 2002. And because many of the applications will be built with Java, the opportunity for Java-based embedded databases is great.

The PointBase Mobile Edition and Network Server
The PointBase Mobile Edition is an embedded database for applications that support mobile workers and Internet appliances such as PDAs, set-top boxes and even potentially such devices as car navigation systems. The PointBase Network Server is an embedded database for networked applications and is especially suited to e-commerce and Java servers.
